Description UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER PULSE Animal- ssisted Therapy Becoming an Important Part of Patient Care Biscuit doesn't know anything medicine but he can always make a patient feel better. The golden retriever is one of 107 Intermountain Therapy Animals ( ITA) who, along with their owners, are making a difference in the recovery of patients at University Hospital. Each animal is specially trained and certified to provide pet- assisted therapy, according to Kathy Klotz, ITA executive director. The group serves patients in hospitals across the state and started working with UH rehab patients about six months ago. " Animals can often act as a bridge between patients and recovery," said Sandi Martin, R. N., manager of volunteer services and community outreach. " When patients see an animal, their eyes light up and it can be a very positive experience. Therapy seems less like therapy and more like playing." She says UH's Burn Physical Therapy Department is currently evaluating whether its patients would benefit from the group's services. Martin says visits from patients' own pets also can be very beneficial in healing. " For many people, pets are just like family members. It is important for patients to see that their pets are all right." She reminds everyone that before pets can enter University Hospital they must be leashed or caged, and patients must first have the permission of their nurse and doctor. For more information about the group's involvement at UH and the hospital's policy on pet visitation, contact Sandi Martin, xl- 2542.
