Description Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) was recognized as a familial optic neuropathy in the nineteenth century and numerous pedigrees have since been reported from Europe, North America, Australia and Asia. LHON has recently received significant notariety as a maternally inherited disease linked to abnormalities in mitochondrial DNA17. Genetic analysis has broadened our view of what constitutes the clinical presentation of LHON. Quite striking is the wide variability of individual clinical features even within members of the same family.
