Oral contraceptives (OC's) block ovulation by interfering with the midcycle gonadotropin surge at both hypothalamic and pituitary levels. The most common formulation in current use is ethinyl estradiol plus one of several synthetic progesterones given for 21 days followed by no treatment for 7 days. |
