Title Presumed "Sulfa" Allergy in Patients with Intracranial Hypertension Treated with Acetazolamide or Furosemide: Cross-reactivity, Myth or Reality?
Creator Lee, Andrew G; Anderson, Randy L; Kardon, Randy H; Wall, Michael H
Subject sulfa allergy; acetazolamide; furosemide
Description Acetazolamide and furosemide are commonly used treatments for papilledema. Patients with "sulfa" allergy have a theoretic risk for allergic cross-reaction with these agents but the clinical and pharmacologic evidence is weak. Unfortunately, presumed "sulfa allergy" is very common in the general population and there are few proven alternative non-sulfonamide agents available for treatment of papilledema.
